About 83.5 percent of Sigourney Jr-Sr High School students met or exceeded math targets in 2018, outpacing the state average of 78.3 percent, and about 80 percent of students met or exceeded reading targets, outpacing the state average of 77 percent, according to a English Valley Guide analysis of the latest Iowa School Performance Profiles.
Each year, Iowa public schools are evaluated based on several metrics, including proficiency, growth, conditions for learning and others. Students that met or exceeded proficiency targets achieved what Iowa School Performance Profiles call "minimally sufficient performance level benchmarks in the subjects of mathematics and reading."
In math, 77.5 percent of Sigourney Jr-Sr High School students with low socio-economic status met or exceeded proficiency targets. That is 13.2 percent more than the state average of 64.3. And 75.6 percent with low socio-economic status met or exceeded proficiency targets in reading. That is 11.9 percent more than the state average of 63.7.
